Here's what people who have adopted from us have to say:
Dear Kylie,
I wanted to let you know what a wonderful weekend we had with Nella. She is an amazing dog who has changed our lives. She has such a loving disposition and is friendly to everyone she meets. Our neighbors have already fallen for her and ask us regularly about her progress. We spent all day Friday hanging around the house and getting to know her. She was so content just spending time with us and following us every where we went. She made friends very quickly with our neighbors' dogs and just seemed like she wanted to play. On Friday evening we went down to a friend of ours who has a black lab, she has been desperate for a friend, well they hit off immediately and played for hours. She ran and ran and ran and ran. She ran herself into exhaustion and slept through the night with no problems. We bought her a dog bed and positioned it right next to our bed. On Saturday we had some friends over for a barbecue. One of our friends has two young children who are three years old and ten months old. Nella adored them both and allowed Cal, the three year old to pet her and play with her all evening. He played catch and wrestled with her all evening long and asked if he could bring Nella to his house to meet his dog Iger. Saturday night went just as well as Friday night with Nella sleeping through the night. It is obvious that she, like her father, enjoys her sleep. We actually had a hard time getting her motivated to start the day on Sunday. We walked her first thing in the morning and she went right back to bed. She was not ready to start her day, but as soon as we went down the stairs she followed. Sunday was spent at Gedney Park where she is allowed to be unleashed to play with other dogs and boy did she play! We spent six hours at the park and she played with every dog in sight. A couple dogs did not approve of her playful spirit and high energy but she learned very quickly who her friends were. It was a good learning experience for her and she loved running around. It was interesting how she would always check to see where we were and she never strayed far. When we found a comfortable place to sit in the shade she did her usual snuggle routine and slept on our laps. Heather said she always wanted a needy, loving dog and we definately have that with Nella. She loves to show affection and appreciation by giving kisses. She is happy with what ever she is doing as long as she is with us and thats what makes her so special. Nella truly appreciates being loved and is evident in her loyalty and willingness to please. She has already learned the heal, sit, stay and come commands with not a whole lot of practice. She will be an expert in a few more weeks. Nella is the perfect dog for us in so many ways and we want to thank you for saving her life. Without your love for her we would not have experienced this joy. It continues to amaze me that someone could actually abandoned her and it hurts to think how frieghtened she must have been particularly knowing how loyal and loving she is. We are happier than words can describe with Nella and we owe our happiness to you. What you did for her was an incredible act of kindness and Knowing Nella, she will never forget you. The invitation is always open for you if you ever want to see her. I am sure she would love to see you. We both want to thank you from the bottom of hearts for filling our life with so much joy. She has lifted our spirits and brightened our days and we look forward to many years with her. Thank you again for all that you have done.
Sincerly,
Mark, Heather & Nella
Pepper's a great guy, and we are thrilled to have adopted him! He is a gentle soul who gets along with everyone! I definitely recommend to everyone adopting a dog to go through a rescue society. The home visit was such a nice experience. We were a little worried about passing, but the women were so nice, and we learned so many new things. Please adopt a dog; it will make you feel like you did something good!
Take care! Julie, Pearl River, NY
Julie, and Dora-Lynn,
First of all I want to thank you for the recommendation to adopt Mason. While searching petfinder.com, sporadically (well over a year), finally, the sparks flew. I saw Mason's picture and fell in love. I looked at him for several days and finally sent an inquiry. It had taken years to finally try to fill that void that my Susie (German Shepherd) had left. To make a long story short, after you and Dora-Lynn made the home visit and recommendation, on Mother's Day weekend, I traveled 3 hours to pick up Mason. He got in the car with my family, and it seems like he has been with us since the day he was born. The woman who was fostering him continually told me how good he was with children and her other pets, and that is the truth. He has brought such a warmth to our home. He is a wonderful addition to our family, and I'm so glad he's with us.

Thanks again. Phyllis Green

BrownieBrownie is doing just great! He has two big soft cushions to choose from, gets to go for lots of walks, is getting loads of attention and petting and praise from Richard and me. He is so incredibly mellow! The only people who are thrilled about this are the cats, but they'll adjust. He is smart and doesn't do anything to startle them; eventually I think they will come around. I introduced him to the ferret yesterday, and they sniffed each other and were fine --Brownie just slept on his cushion while Marlon (the ferret) played around.

We took him to Petsmart, where he got a glorious medicated and moisturizing bath (they said his skin was very dry), got his nails trimmed and generally got some pampering. He looks and smells beautiful now, and is quite pleased with himself. I was going to give him a bath in our tub, but he didn't want to get in and I didn't want to push him. The person at Petsmart said he looks like a Chesapeake, because his nose is longer. Who knows; doesn't really matter. Anyhow, they were so happy with him because he was calm and happy through all of this, didn't mind anything and basically enjoyed himself!

He was really really stiff yesterday, and seemed to have a hard time walking. It looked like he had bad arthritis, especially in his back legs. Is this something you've noticed? I'm sure the ride in the car and the cold damp weather didn't help. But he just limped along slowly most of the time like he was an old old dog. Today he is a little springier, so I'm glad for him. We've walked around our neighborhood all different directions; once the weather is better, I'll take up to the conservation area to walk --lots of great smells there! But I'm being careful not to push him --I want him to build up his strength and stamina at his own pace.

So, I just wanted to let you he is great! We think we will re-name in Bruno --we think he looks like a bear, and it's close enough to the name he's used to. He is so gentle, it's amazing.

Thanks to all of you for all the work and effort you've done to keep him together and to get him out of the shelter before it was too late. I'm delighted to know him, and we're so happy he is with us. I'll stay in touch and let you know how he does.

SUNNY DELIGHTThis is a very special day at our house! Today SUNNY DELIGHT is celebrating his one year forever birthday at home with his sisters Misty Maltese (14) and Ladybug (6 y/o Shih Tzu), and his "totally trained" (per Lisa and Morgan) HuMom, Sharon in Avon, Ohio!!!

This is Sunny today ... happy, joyous, free and laughing with complete abandon at his HuMom as she attempts to get him to "pose!"

Sunny brought to our house a 3rd dimension of love and laughter when he joined his sisters one year ago.

It was one year ago today that my rescue pal Marylu Holcomb joined me on the madcap journey from the Cleveland (OH) area, across the wiiiiiiiiiiide state of Pennsylvania through blizzard conditions, a dash through New Jersey into the nightmare gridlock of the New York freeways through which we miraculously found our way to the Yonkers Animal Shelter (in the nick of time before they closed), where it had been prearranged that I would receive the blessing of adopting this precious little, 4 y/o, 6#, filthy, matted mess of a love bug named, Sunny! From the moment he was handed to me it appeared that he had been waiting for me all along ... he looked up at my face as if to say, "Where've you been, Mom?" Then he snuggled into the crook of my arm with a huge sigh of relief ... and it has been ever such.

WHO is the rescued??? I do believe I am!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of those who participated in Sunny's rescue/adoption ... Marylu Holcomb, Lorraine and Peter Takahashi of Greenwood Lake, NY, Dora-Lynn and Julie of Ginger's Rescue & Friends of the Yonkers Animal Shelter ... and to all of you who have loved him since ... GOD BLESS!

Have a blessed St. Patrick's Day!

Sharon & Misty & Ladybug & SUNNY DELIGHT!!!

Solomon

"Good morning ladies!!!! Sol is fitting right in here!!!!! Lorraine, he was fine on the way home. We stopped to meet his new grand parents, WE had brunch..hehehehe and he sprawled out on the back seat and slept 3/4 of the way home! NO upset tummy...

We arrived at the house and he wanted OUT of the car. I left him out on the leash and he was all over the place smelling and marking everything in site...hehehehe. I took him in the house he ran around, drank, ate a little food, and wanted back OUTSIDE!!!! SSooooo, I walked him into the barn and shut the main barn doors and just left him run around. He could care less about the horses!!!! He was sticking his head under the one stall door barking and wagin his tail trying to get the oldest horse to play. When I told him NO..He immed. stopped and just looked at me like..OK so what else can I do!!????????? LMAO.

I took some of the toys I had gotten him into the barn and was throwing them around and he was running and jumping all over the place!!!!!! Hes an AMAZING dog!!!!! My hubby was doing some electrical work in another part of the barn so Sol was just walking around and then sat down and was watching him for awhile and then SNUCK over and started picking up his tools and carrying them around!!!!!! ROFLMAO.... You had to see it to believe it!!! When he finally got tired, he just plopped down in the middle of the barn isle and was just watching us working.

He helped me feed the horses this am at 5:30!! He ate his breakfast and went back to bed. So Im here in the office now... Tonight Im going to walk him outside around the house more and then up thru the fields. I want to make sure hes VERY use to everything and listens before I take him off lead to just run around and get some exercise!!!

Hes certainly a very AMAZEING dog and acts like hes been here all his life!! NO agression towards the horses so far, just playfulness!! He LOVES to play also. I sat in the barn last evening throwing his toys around and he just LOVED it. Running thru the barn and jumping in the air after the toys.

Im going to let him settle in awhile and then start some basic leash training with him. It certainly shouldnt take him long. Hes very intelligent!!

Thank you ladies for this WONDERFUL guy!!!!!"

"We have had "Jaz" (short for Jasmine) home for a week now and what a great dog she is! She has adjusted suprisingly well for a dog who has lived in a shelter since puppyhood. Not one single 'accident'! Sleeps through the night (after 3 nights in the crate, she somehow ended up on the bed the 4th night).
Our other dog, Murphy, also a shelter dog, loves her! They play together as if they have known each other all their lives. You should see her run with him! Fast! Running, playing, chasing squirrels and then collapsing in a heap together. Jaz seems to have this incredible smile on her face for most of the day. (Do dogs smile or is it my imagination?)
Challenges for Jaz? Stairs. She obviously had never seen stairs. She mastered 'up' pretty quickly but 'down' has taken a bit more time. Ceiling fans. She won't go into a room with a ceiling fan on. We have turned them off for now and she is much happier. Space. She is timid in large rooms. She likes our small den best and has made herself at home in 'my' chair. Nighttime. We don't think she has ever been outside in the dark. She is getting over that one really fast and now is eager for the 'last walk' before bed!
Jaz is a very sweet, loving, self-confident, playful dog who loves to give kisses and whose tail doesn't stop. We feel so lucky to have found her and we can't believe she waited so long (>2 years) for her 'forever' home. We feel the same way about Murphy. Incredible dogs!
We wanted to thank you and your fellow volunteers for the work that you do at the Yonkers Animal Shelter. We know that without your love and attention Jaz would not be the sweet girl she is and would not be with us today. We really hit the 'jackpot' with her and we hope, she, with us."
"Dixie came into our lives at the end of May 2001. The first few weeks were rough on all of us. Dixie had spent most of her life in a animal shelter, then in a foster home. When she was bought to our home, for a trial weekend she was very scared and confused. She missed her foster mom and didn't want to have anything to do with anyone of us in the house. Dixie and our other dog, Freddie, got a long ok. But our cat, Ninja, didn't want her in the house and made this known to everyone. Ninja and Dixie were constantly fighting, Dixie was constantly bothering the parakeet. Luckily, she never knocked the cage over. For a few days I didn't think it was going to work out, but it did. After a few weeks of a lot of love, patience, understanding and prayers. It just seemed like all of a sudden, everything worked out. Dixie and Ninja now have a understanding, Dixie doesn't even look at the parakeet. Dixie is a wonderful, sweet, loving dog. She is very devoted to everyone in the house, loves to go for walks, and insists on going to bed at 11 PM every night. She likes laying on the picnic table to sun herself. She loves playing with her dog toys, which are all over the house. I have always adopted from animal shelters. People need to know that there are really some wonderful, sweet, loving pets that are just waiting for that special person/family to come along to adopt them. If you have a lot of love, patience, and understanding, almost anyone can find their perfect pet, right at their local animal shelter."

pic of Red with his owner
"Red in his new home. He is dearly loved by parents & kids alike and has become a neighborhood mascot -- everybody knows Red & he knows them. My friend, who placed him with the family on the Cape, sees him constantly because his mom takes him to the gym they both belong to. Red is the Chow ambassador of the century. He runs the place: has a snooze while his mom works out, visits with other exercisers, gives each person arriving a sloppy old blue-tongued kiss, and spreads goodwill around lavishly. Red also schmoozes with his doggy pals in his neighborhood -- I gather the whole town has changed its stereotype of Chows, thanks to Red and you! He's still called Red, because what else would he be? He had some health problems at the beginning but they got them solved & he's in great shape. Hope all is well with you & all the great people down there -- you are so wonderful!"

"This is to let you know how greatful we are for all the help for Foxy to get her surgery. Foxy is doing very well. She has gained some weight and she is eating well. We are planning to come down to the shelter for a visit one of these week-ends. I hope all of you will be there when we come so you can see what your hard work and love has done for us. Foxy is a wonderful dog. She love me so much. She waits for me at the dive way by 3:30PM when she know I will be arriving home. Every morning at 5:30Am she comes upstairs to my bed room to wake me up so I will take her out side to do her business. She is all love, and I am very happy to spend what ever life she have left with her. You ladies are doing a great thing. I have been telling people who tell me to go adopt a child instead that how ever you channell your love is alright in God's eyes. "

Rambo and his family"Can't tell you how wonderfully the transfer went! I was a bit apprehensive but everything has been great. Rambo is quite a bit larger than our little girl Lhasa but he's so loving and sweet! He loves us both so much -- doesn't let us get too far away. I think he's still unsure of where his permanent home will be but I know he sure likes us! ....We can't thank you enough for giving us a pet to love but also a homeless one to care for. We missed that so much (a little one around). I"ve told a lot of people who love pets about your good work - many knew nothing about rescue - so maybe more people will do as we did. Please accept our sincere gratitude for all the work this adoption took and for fulfilling our need and those of Rambo..........and God bless you"

"I just called to do a follow-up on Jake. They just love him. The 12 year old son has really taken an interest in Jake. He wakes up extra early every morning so he can walk him and comes straight home from school to walk him - totally voluntary. He has taught Jake how to play tether ball. Jake actually jumps up and hits the ball to Ian and Ian hits it back. Lois, the mom, said to me, "I am a single mom and Ian has no father figure. Jake has made his life complete." And let me tell you, they have made Jake's life complete!"

L'il Bear"Lil Bear is doing absolutely fabulously! Got an email from his mother that they have moved into their new house, Lil Bear has housebroken in record time & they don't even crate him while they're at work. She says they never see him when he isn't wagging his tail. Can't you just imagine that Siberian grin on his face? Debi is so darn grateful for having him, it's a wonderful Christmas present all by itself."

picture of Red"Red is still in his foster home with Shirley -- she adores him & he gets along great with her large Siberian pack. The problem in placing him has been the fear people get when you mention "Chow." He recently had surgery -- nothing life-threatening, but I have to find out how he did. Shirley foots the bill for all this stuff, the angel. So Red is not in a permanent home, but is loved and secure until the perfect family comes along. Will update you as soon as I hear anything more. I asked for photos of Lil Bear, hope she gets some. Hope your holidays are very very happy ones -- you've made them wonderful for lots of dogs!"

"Frootloops is doing sooo well. Trish and I LOVE him so much. He is as much a part of the family as ANY human could ever be. You should hear how loud he purrs when we pick him up and kiss him. We are constantly smothering him with affection. now for the surprise..... Frootloops has a little sister! Her name is Trix, or Trixie as we call her. She is the cutest fluffy little tortoise shell colored angel. She's about 6 mo. old now and she too is part of our family. "

Beauty on a walkHi, it's us again. Lady (Beauty) is doing fine. She is getting use to the property and soon we will let her off the runners. Once we let her loose she chased a bunny and another time a deer, we don't want anything to happen to her (we mean lose her) so we are nervous about letting her loose. She is such a GOOD dog. Loves to be loved. Is eating well and loves to take long walks. She is left at large in the house and one day Scott forgot his cookies for school on the couch and 3 hours later they were still there. Lady never touched them. This is our first dog from a shelter. I don't think I would ever buy one from a pet shop again. Lady came with lots of love and house broken. It has been a great pleasure having her. THANK YOU AGAIN!"
